Verona Day Itinerary

Verona is not just Romeo and Juliet’s town even though they are the perhaps the most famous lovers in history. Verona is the second biggest city in Veneto, Venice being the first one. You will find the Roman theatre and gateways, tombs, Renaissance palaces, Gothic churches and Pisanello’s medieval frescoes.

Verona has the second best preserved Roman Ruins, being surpassed only by Rome. The Roman amphitheatre is also known as the Arena and was build in the first century outside the city walls. Outside the Arena you will find Piazza Bra, a huge square full of bars, restaurants and souvenir shops. Palazzo Barbieri is the town hall and was finished in 1883. Every summer operas and cultural shows are performed at the Roman theatre which can host more than 22,000 people. This place used to host gladiators fights and is very well preserved.

Via Giuseppe Mazzini starts in Piazza Bra and ends in the Grass Square. It is the commercial center of Verona with chic boutiques were you can find the best Italian designer clothes. Grass Square, or Piazza delle Erbe is a colorful market with fresh fruit and vegetables and the place where of the ancient Roman Forum. You can find the Madonna Verona Fountain here, a Roman sculpture that was converted into a Catholic Madonna. There is also the highest tower in Verona, Tower Lamberti, holding the old Rengo and Marangona bells. Palazzo Mafei, guarded by six pagan divinities sculptures is one of the few Baroque buildings in Verona. It also hosts a tourist office. Just a few minutes walk can take you to both Romeo and Juliet’s houses.

Santa Maria Church is guarded by the most original monument, the equestrian Cangrande Sculpture, sitting on a pyramid whose author is an unknown Veronese sculptor. Over the church’s front door you will find the most important monument in Verona dating back to the 14th century.

Sant’Anastasia is the biggest church in Verona where you can admire Pisanello’s Saint George and the Princess dating from the 15th century among other works.

If you cross the Fiume Adige river, you will have the chance to visit other famous attractions in Verona. The semicircular Roman theatre, build in the first century is the place where nowadays Shakespeare Festivals are held. The Stone Bridge dates back from the Roman empire and has been reconstructed several times.
