Simple suggestions on how to save on hotels in Italy that can add up to significant savings.
1. Location, Location, Location.
Get a map and check where your hotel is located. Ask yourself what you want to do while at your destination and check if the hotel’s location is convenient to you and your needs. You don’t want to spend most of your time on transportation. The advantage of being close to tourist attractions and nightlife may outweigh the price you have to pay on hotel rates. Plus you can save money and time if you do not have to rely on public transport or other means of transportation. Staying close to the city center means you will be closer to the vibrant nightlife and restaurants. In case you prefer staying outside the city center, consider the options for transportation, such as renting a car or being close to a subway station.
2. Check past clients reviews on websites like Tripadvisor.
Read reviews once you have decided on where to stay. This way you will know how to choose the best solution and what to expect when you get there. Even if sometimes reviews might not be objective, it is worthwhile to know what other people have to say about the experience they had. Book recommended hotels so as to avoid any unpleasant
surprises.
3. When booking in advance, always seek out special rates.
Check with the major travel booking websites such as expedia, venere, opodo etc. and the hotel’s website itself for last minute deals or call the hotel and ask for special rates. Some hotels are willing to bargain over the room price in low season. Some hotels might offer free nights, or a free night’s stay on a future trip. Competitive prices are offered when you book in advance as well.
4. Be specific with your requests.
If you have any special requests, you should find out if the hotel can meet them at the moment of booking. If you require a specific floor in the hotel, a newspaper or bedroom breakfast service, the staff may comply with your requests. Find out if the room is adequately soundproofed if the hotel is near a noisy road or square and you need a quiet room.
5. Always ask if breakfast is included in the room rate.
If breakfast is not included, you can always make a nice Italian Breakfast at any local “Bar” for a few euros. In case breakfast is included, you might want to know what it consists of. Italians usually have a light breakfast including hot espresso, cappuccino or caffe latte and pastry, but hotels might offer fruit, cereals, cold meats, bacon and eggs and juice.
