Any automatic translation tool is limited

Google translation may be a quick translation tool, but other than a fast rendering of the words in a foreign language, you should not assume that a machine translation is the best option for website localization or translation.

Any automatic translation tool is limited. You might understand the general idea of the text in a foreign language, but an automatic translation is far from being accurate. There are differences related to specific languages, and while some languages can be better translated by machines than others, you should still be very cautious before relying on a tool such as Google translation.

Any text may contain idioms which humans understand better than machines. Any language is continuously evolving so machine translations tend to be unaware of new meanings and text produced by them is often not up to date.

Even for small text size, Google translation may be completely wrong. Other than for casual use, a machine translation will not be helpful. Machine translation cannot discern context meaning the way humans can.  Although a machine can translate most technical terms correctly, you have to make sense out of some words jumbled up together by a non-thinking machine. Only a human translator can render the style of a text. People who work on developing machine translations never assume that humans may be replaced, even if progress is being made in improving the texts translated by machines.

Only humans can understand the cultural component of a text and render it into the target language. Every country has so many variables which are involved in the process of communicating efficiently, that only a native speaker of the language can properly help with a more profound understanding of a text in a foreign language. Knowledge about differences between different cultures will help the process of a better communication. Something that may appear normal in one culture, can be offensive for other cultures. A human translator, who is very competent in both the source language and the target language, has become aware of cultural misunderstandings that can arise and work to smooth the differences and provide a helpful translation.

Website translation and localization made with the help of human translators will make the message accessible, usable and culturally suitable for the target audience. If you use humor in the content of your website, the target audience of the translation may not be able to understand it if the text is machine translated.

A human translator will take into account the register to be used according to the target audience. For example, if the audience is young and informal, more relaxed vocabulary in the translation will make the message more poignant. Use of wrong language for the wrong audience may lead to misunderstanding of the content in your website.

Using pictures in website localization is also important to render a particular message. There are subtle nuances that can be associated with cultural messages, so a person familiar with the culture in which the website has to be translated would be the best choice and reviewer of such a project.

Website Translation, localization and Multilingual SEO…

What’s the key of a successful international website?

Over the past year, many of my clients with international websites have been asking me for an easy and fast way to optimise their sites for each country or the European market. That’s the reason why I wanted to make this post and share with you my thoughts. Please feel free to share yours too by leaving your comments ,-) .

You may know already that an “international” website is a website for an international audience. In order to reach an international audience you will need to Translate and Localize your website in other languages. English is the most common language but that doesn’t mean that everyone on this planet speaks and understand perfectly English. Only 37 percent of the world’s online population speaks English as a first language.

Translate your website in other languages such as Spanish, Italian, French ect will assure you a niche of market you will never get if your website is only written in English.

But translating your website is not the only thing you will need to do in order to reach multilingual audiences. Your website needs to be localized. WEBSITE LOCALIZATION is the process of modifying an existing website to make it accessible, usable and culturally suitable to a new target audience. It is a multi-layered process needing both programming expertise and linguistic/cultural knowledge as well as marketing knowledge. If a website is only translated to a different language, the chances to reach a new market are lower.

The website localization process comes normally first. Followed up by the website and content translation. At least this is what I normally do as I prefer to search and focus first on the market and audience niche. It is important to study the right words, the target audience age you are communicating with, the society class as well as your competitors in that particular country. In the majority of cases it is the lack of linguistic and cultural input that lets a website localization down.

Finally but not least is: INTERNATIONAL or MULTILINGUAL SEO!

Multilingual SEO is an important component to an effective global Internet marketing strategy. Some search engines are better than others and work differently, too. Google results, for instance, may differ from country to country. Just because you’ve achieved a certain rank for targeted keywords for the U.S. doesn’t mean you’ll achieve the same results for Italy or Spain, for instance.

So, these are some tips you may take in consideration for your multilingual marketing:

- Know Your Audience first.

- Modify Web Page Code for your new market

- Choose the right Domain or Domain Extensions

- Use the Native Language always.

Please share your comments here below and don’t forget about my translation, localization and international seo services in Italian and Spanish.

Website Localization and Translation

Business owners who want to expand worldwide should realise that not everyone in the world speaks English.

Translating a website into another language is not easy. You must localize it in a specific culture, in a comunity of people who speak their own language, have their own customs and expect goods to be suitable for them.

In order to translate a website or localize it, an extensive knowledge of the local culture and history is essential. That is why the whole process is called website localization rather than translation. Such a translator needs also to be a specialist in the field and culture the text targets.

That’s why it is always important making an effort to find a person who will do website localisation more than just translation as the benefits might be inestimable.

Website localization is so important as what is localized is not only the text but the whole content together with pictures and colors – everything not only to let people understand the text but to reach the foreign clients with the understanding of their needs. It is the same as with translation of the movie titles, they are often completely different form the source ones as the original titles simply did not fit the receivers in their language.
