Italian Email: Writing an Email or a Letter in Italian

Writing a letter can be a challenge for some people, particularly when you have to write a letter or an email in Italian. Having a background in different language such as French, Spanish or perhaps Latin, may help you understand Italian documents, but writing an email is a completely different story.

There are numerous opportunities for learning documents in Italian. It may be applying for an Italian passport, writing someone who shares your family name, if you are interested in learning more about your Italian

heritage. You can even use this skill when you have to write an inquiry or perhaps a complaint letter to an Italian company, and make hotel and travel reservations. There different types of Italian letters that you can use.

Here are some of the frequently use Italian forms and commercial letters:

  • Richiesta di offerta: It is a request asking for information, for instance an address, congratulations, or perhaps to confirm information
  • Conferma d’ordine: Order confirmation
  • Reclamo: This a letter of complaint
  • Avviso di spedizione: This is a mailing notice
  • Prenotazione (di viaggio/ di albergo)—This for hotel travel reservations
  • Domanda di impiego—This letter is for a job application

Once you have decided what you want for your email. You may begin the Italian email or letter with a “Gentilissima Signora” if it is for a female and “Egregio Signore” for male. This means Dear Mrs. and Dear Sir respectively. You may end the letter with Cordiali saluti that means “Sincerely”.

It always helps to write a letter in your native language so that you can get the whole thought out. The standard rule in writing a letter applies to this one. You have to write the letterhead, address, date, letter body, closing and also the signature.

It  would be advisable to translate the letter sentence by sentence systematically. However, THIS IS NOT 100% error free. Another way to do it would have someone proofread your letter to avoid putting yourself in an embarrassing situation. It always helps when that someone speaks Italian fluently. If you do not have a friend who speaks Italian, you can find an Italian student or scholar in a university or perhaps your neighborhood Italian organization, if you have one.
